“How much money do I need?” and “can you actually live on what you earn over there?” are two of the most-asked questions in our groups. Here’s what it really costs to live in Australia in 2026 on a working holiday: rent, transport, food, a night out, and what you’ll earn. Every figure links to its source, because prices change fast. ☘️
Short version: a room in Sydney now averages over $300 a week. But the minimum wage is $26.44 an hour, and working holiday makers pay just 15% tax on the first $45,000, so a full-time job comfortably covers a sensible budget. The hard part is the first few weeks, before the wages start.
What You’ll Earn
| Item | 2026 figure |
|---|---|
| National minimum wage (from 1 July 2026) | $26.44/hour, or $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week |
| Casual workers | Usually an extra 25% casual loading on the award rate |
| Working holiday maker tax | 15% on income up to $45,000 (no tax-free threshold) |
| Superannuation | Your employer pays 12% on top of your wages. You can claim it back when you leave. |
Many hospitality, retail and construction jobs pay above minimum wage, especially with weekend and evening penalty rates. Make sure you give your employer your Tax File Number, or they’ll take tax at the top rate. Our first week in Australia checklist covers how to get your TFN.
Rent: The Big One
Most people on a working holiday rent a room in a share house or flat. According to Rent.com.au (June 2026):
- Sydney: about $315 a week for a room in a house, and about $490 for a room in an apartment
- National average: about $233 a week for a room in a house, and about $425 in an apartment
For a whole unit, Domain’s June 2026 median weekly rents were about $780 in Sydney, $700 in Perth, $660 in Brisbane, $600 in Melbourne and $550 in Adelaide. That’s why most people share. Up-to-date room medians for each city outside Sydney weren’t published, but Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide rooms generally sit closer to the national average than to Sydney’s.
Bond: usually up to 4 weeks’ rent, plus rent in advance. So for a $300-a-week room, budget around $1,500+ to move in. Never pay a bond before you’ve seen the room and signed something. Bond scams are the most common scam we see in our groups.
Getting Around: Public Transport by City
| City | 2026 fares |
|---|---|
| Sydney (Opal) | Weekly cap of $50 (frozen until mid-2027). You can tap on with your bank card. |
| Melbourne (myki) | Daily cap $11.40 (zones 1+2), $8 on weekends |
| Brisbane (Translink) | 50c flat fare on all services (excluding Airtrain). It’s the best deal in the country. |
| Perth (Transperth) | $2.80 a trip anywhere with SmartRider, $7 DayRider, free on Sundays |
Food and Groceries
Finder puts the average weekly grocery bill for a single person at about $152. You can do it for less if you cook in bulk with housemates and shop the specials at Aldi, Coles and Woolworths. Eating out adds up fast: a café breakfast and coffee easily costs $25+.
Phone
A prepaid plan from the big networks starts at around $44 every 28 days (Optus raised its prices on 30 September 2026). Budget brands on the same networks start lower, from about $30. To land with data already working, grab an Airalo Australia eSIM before you fly, then switch to a local plan.
A Night Out
Australia isn’t cheap for a pint. In Melbourne, a pint is roughly $14–18.50 in 2026. Happy hours, the local pub and BYO restaurants are your friends.
Example Weekly Budget: Sydney
| Item | Per week |
|---|---|
| Room in a share house | $315 |
| Groceries | $150 |
| Transport (Opal cap) | up to $50 |
| Phone | about $11 |
| Going out, gym and other spending | $100–200 |
| Total | about $625–725 |
Compare that with a full-time minimum wage of $1,004.90 a week, which is about $854 after 15% tax. So even on the minimum, a full-time worker in Sydney can cover the basics and save a little. Most people earn more than the minimum, and every other capital city is cheaper on rent. Brisbane’s 50c fares save you a fortune on transport too.
This is an illustration, not financial advice. Your real tax depends on your total income for the year and whether your employer is registered to employ working holiday makers.
How Much Money Should You Bring?
For the Working Holiday Visa, you’re generally expected to show around AUD 5,000 in funds, plus enough for an onward or return flight. Check the current requirements on the Home Affairs website. In practice, we’d recommend arriving with more, because your first weeks are the expensive part:
- a week or two in a hostel while you look for a room
- bond plus rent in advance (often $1,500+ in Sydney)
- your first weeks of food and transport before your first pay day
- work tickets like the RSA or White Card
Get your savings over without losing a chunk to your bank: use Wise for everyday amounts (your first transfer is free), or TorFX for $5,000+ (no transfer fees, and your own account manager). Full guide: cheapest way to transfer money from Ireland to Australia.
Don’t Forget Insurance
It’s not a weekly cost, but it’s the one that saves you thousands if something goes wrong. The Ireland–Australia reciprocal health agreement doesn’t cover GPs, ambulances or getting you home. We recommend True Traveller for Irish working holiday makers. More in our travel insurance guide for Australia and does Medicare cover Irish people in Australia?.
