There are no direct flights from Australia to Ireland. The quickest way home is one stop in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, which takes about 21 to 25 hours depending on your city. When we checked Google Flights in October 2026, typical return fares to Dublin ran from about $1,400 in the cheapest month to over $4,000 in December.
Here’s who flies the route, how long it takes, when it’s cheapest and what to sort before you go. Prices change daily, so every figure is dated.
Short version

Search flights home
Our free flight finder runs one search on four sites. Pick your city (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide or the Gold Coast), your airport at home (Dublin, Shannon, Cork, Knock or Belfast) and your dates, and it opens Google Flights, Skyscanner, Aviasales and Kiwi.com with the search filled in. There are quick picks for Christmas and the Irish summer too.
Which airlines fly from Australia to Ireland?
These are the main ways home, checked on the airlines’ own sites and in 2026 airline news.
| Airline and stop | Flies from |
|---|---|
| Emirates, via Dubai | Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, all with one stop to Dublin. |
| Qatar Airways, via Doha | Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Canberra returns from 9 December 2026, stopping in Melbourne on the way to Doha. |
| Etihad, via Abu Dhabi | Sydney and Melbourne were the cities on Etihad’s Australian fares page for Dublin when we checked. |
| Virgin Australia, via Doha | Sydney and Melbourne, on Qatar Airways planes, connecting to Qatar’s Dublin flights. Brisbane and Perth are due back in December 2026. |
| Turkish Airlines, via Singapore and Istanbul | Sydney and Melbourne. That’s two stops. |
| Qantas or British Airways, via Singapore and London | Sydney, and Qantas from Perth. You change in London for Dublin. |
From Brisbane and Adelaide, the cheapest fares we saw on Google Flights paired a Qantas flight with Etihad, which adds a second stop.
Keep an eye on the Gulf
Smartraveller’s advice for the UAE and Qatar (updated 8 October 2026) is to exercise a high degree of caution, and it warns that airspace could close at short notice, affecting flights at Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha. Qantas is routing its Perth to London flights through Singapore to avoid Middle East airspace, with that schedule running to at least 31 January 2027. Check Smartraveller and your airline’s travel alerts when you book and again before you fly.
Flying into Shannon, Cork, Knock or Belfast
Your long-haul flight will land in Dublin or another hub, so plan the last leg:
- Cork: Aer Lingus flies from London Heathrow and KLM from Amsterdam. Cork Airport says the Heathrow flights link to the British Airways network, including Australia.
- Shannon: Aer Lingus flies from London Heathrow.
- Knock: Ireland West Airport lists flights from London Heathrow, Stansted and Luton, plus Manchester, Birmingham and other UK airports.
- Belfast: British Airways flies from Heathrow to Belfast City. Or land in Dublin and take the Dublin Express coach from the airport to Belfast Grand Central, which takes 1 hour 50 minutes on the fastest service.
Driving instead? Google Flights puts Shannon about 2 hours 36 minutes from Dublin and Cork about 2 hours 52 minutes. If you do book a connection, keep it on one ticket where you can (see self-transfer below).

Christmas and the Irish summer
We ran two real searches on Google Flights in October 2026:
- Christmas, Sydney to Dublin, 17 December 2026 to 10 January 2027: Google said prices were “currently high”, and that similar trips usually cost $2,450 to $3,450. It said the cheapest time to book is usually earlier, “up to 5 months before take-off”, when fares averaged $339 less.
- Summer, Sydney to Dublin, 1 to 25 July 2027: Google said prices were typical, with similar trips usually costing $1,850 to $2,750.

How to find a cheap flight home
- Check more than one site. Our flight finder runs the same search on Google Flights, Skyscanner, Aviasales and Kiwi.com.
- Be flexible. Google Flights has a date grid and a price graph that show fares for nearby dates.
- Set a price alert. On Google Flights, turn on “Track prices” for your dates, or pick “Any dates” if you’re flexible. Google emails you when the price changes significantly.
- Check the bags. Google Flights warns that “optional charges and bag fees may apply”. If you need extra, add it online before you fly: Etihad says you can save up to 65% that way.
- Be careful with self-transfer tickets. Some sites, including Kiwi.com, join separate tickets together. Kiwi says you collect your bags at the transfer airport and check them in again, and if a delay makes you miss the next flight, the airline that caused it “will only help you with flights that are part of their reservation”. Kiwi.com offers its own Guarantee as an add-on, so read what it covers first.
- Book with the airline if you can. If plans change, you deal with whoever sold you the ticket. As consumer group CHOICE puts it, “whoever you paid your money to is generally who you need to get your money back from”.

Before you fly: visas and passports
If you’re living in Australia on a visa, make sure you can get back in before you book.
- On a bridging visa? Home Affairs says “Only a Bridging visa B (BVB) will let you leave and re-enter Australia” while you wait for a decision on your visa. If you leave on any other bridging visa, such as a Bridging visa A, it ceases. You have to apply for a BVB from inside Australia and be here when it’s granted, and it comes with a set travel period. See Bridging visa B on the Home Affairs site, and our bridging visa guide.
- Got a new passport? Tell Home Affairs so it can link your visa to the new passport. Through ImmiAccount that takes 3 business days. The web form takes 14 days.
- Irish passport running out? You can renew online through Passport Online from anywhere in the world. In April 2026 the Department of Foreign Affairs gave an average of 10 working days for a simple adult renewal, counted from when your documents arrive.
Flying out from Ireland
Coming the other way? Most of this guide works in reverse.
- Prices: Google Flights said the cheapest month from Dublin to Sydney is typically May (€890 to €1,250 return) and the dearest is December (€1,350 to €2,700), when we checked in October 2026.
- Visa: Irish passport holders can visit on a free eVisitor visa (subclass 651), staying up to 3 months each time. You apply from outside Australia, and you can’t work on a visitor visa.
- Delays: EU compensation rules cover your flight out of Dublin, whichever airline you fly (see below).
- Extras: get an Australia eSIM from Airalo before you go, and move money over with CurrencyFair (our money transfer guide compares options).
- Landing: see our guides to the Irish in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast and Perth.
Flight delayed or cancelled? Your EU rights
EU Regulation 261/2004 can pay up to €600 per person when a long-haul flight is cancelled at short notice or arrives 4 hours or more late. But direction matters. The EU’s Your Europe site says the rules cover flights leaving the EU on any airline, but flights arriving in the EU only on an EU airline.
- Dublin to Australia: covered, even on Emirates, Qatar Airways or Etihad, because you’re leaving from the EU. Your Europe says the same rule applies to connecting flights on a single reservation, with the delay measured at your final destination.
- Australia to Dublin on a Gulf airline: not covered, because Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad aren’t EU airlines. You’d rely on the airline’s own policies and your travel insurance.
For flights over 3,500 km, arriving 3 to 4 hours late pays €300, and 4 hours or more pays €600. A cancellation counts if you were told less than 14 days before departure, depending on the replacement flight offered. Extraordinary circumstances, such as bad weather or security risks, don’t qualify, but the airline should still give you meals during a long wait and a hotel if your new flight is the next day.
How to claim: complain to the airline first using its own form. It’s free. If there’s no reply within 2 months, or you’re unhappy with it, you can go to the national authority in the country where it happened. If you’d rather not chase it yourself, AirHelp works on a no win, no fee basis, but keeps 35% of any compensation, including VAT.
