We always wondered exactly how many Irish people are living in Australia, well now we have the figures.
More than 22,000 Irish emigrants have permanently settled in Australia since the beginning of the recession, new figures obtained by the Sunday Independent reveal.
The latest Settlement Report from the Australian Government shows that “22,170 people born in Ireland have permanently settled in Australia from October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2014″.
Of these, almost 17,500 are categorised as “skilled” people who are remaining in Australia to fill current and emerging skill shortages that benefit the economy, while the rest, over 4,700, are staying for family reasons.
Ireland now features at number 11 in their list of top 25 countries that have officially migrated to Australia in the last five years. The top 10 includes: India, China, UK, Philippines, South Africa, Vietnam. Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Korea and Pakistan.
