When you first come to Australia from Ireland or anywhere getting your trade recognised can be difficult. Sure you can pick up a job pretty much straight away but you are limited by the amount you can earn and it makes sense to get it sorted for the long term.
If you are working as a skilled labourer but don’t have a specific qualification then Skills Recognition and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a simple method of assessing skills and experience you have developed “on the job” without the need for classroom study.
Who Can Apply
You can apply for a trade qualification using Skills Recognition and RPL if you can:
- Show you have at least 3 years general trade experience, or 2 years trade experience combined with “well developed” skills and knowledge in an associated field.
- Provide sufficient evidence that verifies you have been regularly employed in the industry performing jobs relating to the scope of work associated with that trade.
Trade experience is relevant whether you have worked in Australia or overseas.
The skills recognition and RPL process for the Trade qualifications usually takes 2 – 4 weeks to fully complete.
Once you have completed your trade qualification, it may likely be used for a Trade License application.
Another option is to ‘fast track’ a higher level qualification. By using the recently obtained certificate combined with further relevant industry experience you may be eligible for a Diploma or even an Advanced Diploma; and these may be used to obtain credits towards a Bachelor degree qualification.
“Tradies“ may very well have the experience to qualify for qualifications in various fields.
