Australia Planning To Increase Defacto Visas By 50% In 2015

(Last Updated On: December 17, 2014)

If everything goes according to plan, Australians who fall in love with or marry a foreigner will have to pay more for their partners to visit Australia.

The Abbott government has recently announce that it will increase the visa application charges for partner visas by 50% to raise $373.6 million for the budget repair job over the next four years.

The price increase, which was announced during the mid-year budget review, will be implemented on the first day of January, 2015. Once in effect, the cost of a foreign love affair is expected to increase by several thousand dollars, analysts said.

For example, provisional and permanent partner visas will cost $4627.50 from the current $3085.

Meanwhile, the national government also announced plans to increase Australia’s refugee intake starting in 2017 to 2018. This will reportedly cost the country about $140 million over the course of two years.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said the initiative will be fully funded from offsets within his portfolio.
