Thomas Keaney, who was originally from Galway, died at Royal Perth Hospital during the night after the life support machine which had been keeping him alive was switched off.
The 23-year-old was outside a kebab shop with friends at 2am on 17 December when a confrontation took place with a group of men. Western Australia Police say he was punched once in the head and fell to the ground, hitting his head on the pavement.
A 22-year-old man appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday to face charges of grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident. He was remanded in custody until 13 January.
Thomas Keaney had been working at an Irish bar in Northbridge, a suburb of Perth.
